What Could Your Student Explore?
Costa Rica offers countless opportunities to turn science into something students can see, measure, investigate, and experience.
Drawing from more than two decades of science teaching and curriculum development, I offer field-based lessons and investigations that can complement a student’s current coursework or be built around their individual interests and questions.
Students may explore biodiversity in local ecosystems, conduct flora and fauna surveys, test water quality, examine aquatic macroinvertebrates, study weather and microclimates, investigate runoff and erosion, complete beach trash audits, explore human impacts on ecosystems, or develop their own environmental investigation.
Lessons can be scheduled individually or for small groups of students working on similar coursework. Sessions may be offered as individual field experiences or combined into a series of connected lessons.
Have something else in mind? Student questions and interests are always welcome. We can work together to develop an investigation around a topic they want to explore.
LEARNING THROUGH NATURE™
Outdoor science resources inspired by learning in the real world
My experiences with outdoor learning in Costa Rica and the United States—and exploring nature with my own family—led me to develop Learning Through Nature™, a collection of resources designed to help students engage in scientific inquiry outdoors.
The lessons are inquiry-based, standards-aligned, and designed to get students actively observing, questioning, collecting data, analyzing evidence, and making sense of the natural world around them. Just as importantly, they provide the structure and support teachers and homeschool parents need to feel confident taking science beyond the classroom and into their own backyards, schoolyards, and local environments.
Here in Costa Rica, many of these investigations can also become facilitated outdoor science experiences. Students can participate individually or in small groups, choose a single field lesson, or build a series of investigations around their coursework and interests.
